Shahir Rajendra Kamble Honoured at PCMC Event

  • Social awareness week begins with cultural programmes and strong reformist message

Pimpri : Veteran folk artist Shahir Rajendra Kamble was felicitated by Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Mayor Ravi Landge at the inauguration of ‘Samajik Samata Saptah’ and ‘Vichar Prabodhan Parv 2026’, marking the bicentenary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and the 135th birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Accepting the honour, Kamble said he has spent over four decades spreading social awareness across Maharashtra through Shahiri, inspired by the ideals of Phule, Shahu Maharaj and Ambedkar. He reaffirmed his commitment to continue this mission with greater vigour, calling it not just an art form but a social responsibility.

The inaugural ceremony witnessed the presence of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryavanshi, Deputy Mayor Sharmila Babar, and other civic leaders, along with social activists and citizens. The felicitation citation was read by Special Officer Kiran Gaikwad.

The opening day featured a series of cultural and thought-provoking performances. Sharada Munde’s solo act ‘Mee Jotibachi Savitri’ portrayed the inspiring journey of Savitribai Phule, while Kamble’s Shahiri performance delivered powerful messages of equality and social reform.

Musical renditions by Sadhana Meshram and Manjusha Shinde added a melodic touch to the theme of awareness. A staging of Mahatma Phule’s play ‘Tritiya Ratna’ highlighted issues of superstition, social injustice and the importance of education. The poetry programme ‘Gatha Sau Jotichi’ further celebrated the legacy of Phule and Savitribai.

The week-long initiative aims to promote social equality, awareness and cultural engagement among citizens.
