NCP Gherao Triggers Chaos in PCMC Meet; Mayor Adjourns House
Pimpri : The long-pending issue of appointing nominated corporators in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) once again triggered chaos during the general body meeting held on Tuesday. The matter was deferred yet again, leading to a strong protest by NCP corporators, who gheraoed the mayor inside the hall.
The issue came up as agenda item No. 1, where BJP corporator Vinod Nadhe read out a sub-motion on the mayor’s instructions, which was seconded by corporator Kushagra Kadam. Subsequently, BJP corporator Uttam Kendale requested that the matter be postponed, prompting objections from Leader of Opposition Bhausaheb Bhoir.
Bhoir demanded that at least the three names recommended by their side be cleared immediately. “Announce our three names now, you can finalise yours next year. Our names have already been forwarded by the administration. There is no reason to defer the issue,” he said, adding that even some BJP members were unhappy with the delay.
Responding to this, BJP group leader Prashant Shitole stated that the party had no objection to the names suggested by the opposition but insisted on deferring the matter. Acting on the request, Mayor Ravi Landge announced the postponement.
The decision led to a major uproar, with NCP corporators aggressively protesting and raising slogans, alleging that the city’s development was being stalled. Several members surrounded the mayor, creating a tense atmosphere in the house.
Sensing the situation could escalate further, the mayor attempted to pacify the members by assuring that the remaining formalities would be completed and the issue would be resolved by the 15th of the month. However, the assurance failed to calm the agitated corporators.
Amid the chaos, BJP corporator Shatrughan Kate appealed for order, stating that crucial issues like water supply needed immediate attention and other matters could be taken up later. Despite this, the ruckus continued, forcing the mayor to adjourn the meeting for 15 minutes.
