Andhare Seeks Culpable Homicide Case in Moshi Deaths
- Demands criminal case against PCMC officials and Antony Lara Company
Pimpri : Shiv Sena (UBT) deputy leader Sushma Andhare on Sunday demanded that Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) officials and Antony Lara, the company operating the Waste-to-Energy project at the Moshi garbage depot, be booked for culpable homicide over the July 8 landfill collapse that claimed the lives of nine workers.
Addressing a press conference in Chinchwad after meeting the families of the deceased and injured workers, Andhare alleged that the tragedy was entirely man-made and accused the civic administration of attempting to shield those responsible. Ubt party city chief Chetan Pawar, Romi Sandhu and other party workers were present during press conference.
She said a mere inquiry would not deliver justice and insisted that criminal cases be registered against the Municipal Commissioner, the project officer, and the company. “There should not be a farcical investigation. Those responsible must face criminal prosecution,” she said, warning that Shiv Sena (UBT) would move the Bombay High Court and launch street protests if action was not taken.
Questioning the transparency of the civic administration, Andhare said PCMC failed to provide timely information about the number of workers present at the site, those rescued, the injured, and the legal status of the collapsed structure. She alleged that officials avoided public accountability instead of addressing citizens through an official briefing.
Raising serious concerns over the building itself, Andhare claimed that only the ground floor had received a completion certificate while two additional floors were constructed without approval. She also questioned the quality of construction, noting that the building collapsed within months of being built.
She further alleged that despite the collapse of a chimney at the project on World Environment Day, no corrective measures were taken. According to her, authorities ignored potential risks from nearby quarry blasting, the absence of a protective retaining wall, and the
possibility of methane gas accumulation at the landfill.
Andhare also criticised the rescue operation, alleging that inadequate machinery was deployed initially, resulting in the loss of crucial time. She said the administration should have registered a police complaint on its own instead of waiting for grieving families to approach the police.
Calling Antony Lara’s announcement of Rs. 5 lakh compensation for the deceased workers’ families “grossly inadequate,” she demanded adequate financial assistance, all statutory benefits, and accountability from both the company and civic authorities. She reiterated that Shiv Sena (UBT) would continue its legal, political, and public agitation until the victims’ families receive justice and those responsible are held accountable.
Key Demands
- Register a culpable homicide case against PCMC officials and Antony Lara.
- Suspend the officials responsible for the project.
- Provide adequate compensation and statutory benefits to victims’ families.
- Ensure criminal accountability instead of limiting the matter to an inquiry.
- Initiate legal and public protests if the government fails to act.
