Massive Rally in Ahilyanagar Demands SC Reservation Sub-Categorisation

  • Implement Supreme Court Verdict Without Delay, Says MLC Amit Gorkhe

Pune : A massive rally organised by the Sakal Matang Samaj was held in Ahilyanagar demanding the immediate implementation of sub-categorisation within the Scheduled Castes (SC) reservation system to ensure equitable benefits for historically deprived sub-castes.

The rally began at Adya Krantiguru Lahuji Vastad Salve Chowk, Laltaki, and concluded at the District Collector’s Office, witnessing an overwhelming participation of community members, youth activists, and women. The city echoed with slogans such as “Implement SC Sub-Categorisation Now” and “Ensure Social Justice for the Deprived.”

Demand Pending for Over Four Decades

The demand for SC reservation sub-categorisation has been raised by the Matang community for more than four decades. Following the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment on August 1, 2024, state governments were granted the constitutional authority to introduce sub-categorisation within Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to ensure that the benefits of reservation reach the most disadvantaged communities.

The Matang community has long maintained that it has not received proportionate representation in government jobs, education, and welfare schemes despite being included in the Scheduled Castes category. Since 1980, the community has consistently demanded equitable distribution of reservation benefits.

Since 2022, several social organisations, political groups, and community leaders have united under the banner of Sakal Matang Samaj Maharashtra to intensify the movement for sub-categorisation.

MLC Amit Gorkhe Reiterates Support

Addressing the gathering, MLC Amit Gorkhe expressed strong support for the Supreme Court’s verdict and the Maharashtra Government’s stand on SC reservation sub-categorisation.

“The immediate implementation of the Supreme Court’s decision is essential to ensure that the Matang community and other deprived Scheduled Caste sub-groups receive their rightful and lawful share of reservation benefits. The struggle for social justice will continue until the benefits of reservation reach the last person in society,” Gorkhe said.

The organisers urged the Maharashtra Government to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling without further delay, stating that only effective sub-categorisation would ensure fair representation and meaningful social justice for the most marginalised sections within the Scheduled Castes.
