PMRDA to Drive Pune’s Future Development: Focus on Infrastructure and Urban Planning
- Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari reviews urban and rural projects; ₹43,000-crore works to be pushed for execution
Pimpri : Emphasizing that Pune city and its surrounding region are extremely important for the state’s development, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari said that concrete steps will be taken to ensure planned urbanization. He shared this information while interacting with journalists after recently assuming charge as the head of PMRDA.
Dr. Chaudhari stated that the future of Pune city is closely linked with PMRDA and that he has begun reviewing development works in both urban and rural areas. He added that Pune district is a crucial part of the state and strengthening infrastructure in the region will be a key priority.
He said major development projects will be completed within the stipulated timelines and efforts will be made to resolve the city’s traffic problems. The Metro project in Pune is currently underway, and a flyover in the city was recently inaugurated. Special attention will also be given to projects such as major road development, sewage treatment plants (STPs), and environmental conservation initiatives.
PMRDA will focus on preparing a Development Plan (DP) along with modern urban planning. Efforts will also be made to remove obstacles in the building permission process to facilitate smoother development.
Dr. Chaudhari noted that good initiatives usually receive public support, but sometimes tough decisions are necessary for development. He pointed out that development works worth nearly ₹43,000 crore are currently only on paper, and the administration will work to bring these projects to reality.
Acknowledging that PMRDA currently has limited connection with rural areas, he said efforts are underway to strengthen outreach. Projects that benefit rural areas—including affordable housing, improved connectivity, and development-oriented infrastructure—will be prioritized.
He also mentioned that it takes time for an institution to stabilize, but to improve administrative efficiency, he will hold review meetings with various department heads over the coming week.
Dr. Chaudhari added that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is closely monitoring development in Pune, and a comprehensive and planned urban development framework will be prepared for Pune and its surrounding region.
