PCMC Orders Water-Saving Measures, Warns of Disciplinary Action
Commissioner Dr Vijay Suryawanshi directs all departments to prevent wastage and promptly repair leaks
Pimpri : Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Commissioner Dr Vijay Suryawanshi has directed all departments to implement immediate measures to conserve water and prevent wastage. A circular issued under his signature warns that disciplinary action will be taken against employees found negligent in implementing the instructions.
The city has an estimated population of 38 lakh and receives around 650 million litres of water daily. Its total approved water allocation from the Pavana, Bhama Askhed and Andra dams stands at 9.99 TMC. Currently, water is supplied once every alternate day.
The civic body has instructed officials to inspect taps, pipelines and water-supply equipment in municipal offices, hospitals, schools, markets and other buildings, and repair leakages immediately.
The Education Department will create awareness among students about water conservation, while the Health Department must prevent unnecessary water use in public toilets. The Sports and Garden Departments have been asked to use treated wastewater instead of drinking water for grounds and gardens wherever feasible.
The Water Supply Department, in coordination with the Information Technology Department, will also facilitate GPS-based registration of leakage complaints and ensure timely resolution. The civic body has further proposed recognising plumbers who effectively help prevent water wastage.
“Every department must conduct regular inspections and take necessary measures to conserve water. Instructions have been issued to promptly resolve leakage complaints, prevent unnecessary use of drinking water in municipal establishments and regularly review the implementation of water-saving measures.”
- Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi, PCMC Commissioner
