PCMC May Use Pruned Tree Wood as Crematorium Fuel

• Standing Committee discusses proposal; decision awaited on new tree-pruning policy

PIMPRI : The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is considering a separate policy for pruning overgrown, dangerous and obstructive trees and their branches in the city. The civic body is also exploring a system to collect wood generated from tree pruning and the removal of dangerous trees and make it available as fuel at crematoriums.

The proposal was discussed during the meeting of the PCMC Standing Committee on Wednesday, Standing Committee Chairman Abhishek Barne said at a press conference. A decision on the proposal is awaited.

Residents often face difficulties due to dangerous trees and overgrown branches in several parts of the city. There have also been complaints about delays in obtaining permission for pruning or removing trees when they pose a risk or obstruction. At the same time, tree pruning generates a considerable quantity of branches and wood. Such material is sometimes dumped at different locations instead of being put to proper use.

Against this backdrop, the civic administration is considering collecting and utilising the wood generated through authorised tree pruning and removal work as fuel at crematoriums across the city. The move could help ensure better utilisation of tree waste and potentially reduce the cost of firewood required for cremation services.
Barne said the proposed policy would aim to ensure timely permissions for dealing with dangerous trees, regulate pruning work and establish a proper system for the collection and utilisation of the resulting wood.

“The objective is to prevent the wastage of wood generated while pruning dangerous or overgrown trees. If this wood is used as fuel at crematoriums, it can be put to good use. It may also help provide free or low-cost cremation facilities to citizens. We are considering framing an appropriate policy and implementing it,”
