PCMC Issues Show-Cause Notices to Two Engineers After Moshi Dump Tragedy

Pimpri : Following the death of nine contract workers in the Moshi garbage dump collapse, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi has issued show-cause notices to Chief Engineer-I Sanjay Kulkarni and Executive Engineer Yogesh Alhat, citing serious lapses in safety management and negligence of duty.

The Commissioner has also stripped both officers of their key departmental responsibilities pending further orders. Kulkarni’s charge of the Environment Engineering, Drainage, BSUP and PMAY departments has been assigned to Chief Engineer-II Pramod Ombase, while Alhat’s responsibilities in the Environment Engineering Department have been handed over to Executive Engineer Sohan Nikam.

The notices accuse the officers of negligence in safety measures, poor risk management, violation of safety norms, overlooking unauthorized construction, and allegedly providing misleading information to senior officials. They have been directed to submit their explanations by 5 pm on July 14, failing which departmental inquiry, disciplinary action, and suspension may be initiated under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and Maharashtra Civil Services Rules.

However, despite the seriousness of the accident, the officials have not been suspended, prompting questions over whether issuing notices and reassigning duties is sufficient after a tragedy that claimed nine lives. The civic administration’s next course of action will depend on their replies and the outcome of the inquiry.
