Opposition Alleges Irregularities in Sambhaji Maharaj Statue Project, Seeks Probe
Pimpri : Serious allegations of financial irregularities and violations in the tender process have been raised in the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj statue project (Phase 1 and 2), with opposition leaders demanding a high-level inquiry.
Leader of Opposition Bhausaheb Bhoi r submitted a memorandum to the Municipal Commissioner, highlighting multiple lapses in planning, execution, and financial management.
According to the information, around ₹14.40 crore was allegedly wasted due to the selection of an incorrect project site, which was later changed due to inadequate verification by the consultant. The opposition has demanded accountability and recovery of the loss from those responsible.
Concerns were also raised over the appointment of M/s Dhaneshwar Company, which allegedly lacked prior experience in statue construction. The actual statue work was executed by noted sculptor Ram Sutar, raising questions about the role of the main contractor and possible violations of tender norms, including CVC guidelines and Maharashtra purchase policies.
Further, the project’s second phase reportedly saw a cost escalation of over 35% from the original tender amount, which opposition leaders claim is незаконно without re-tendering. Allegations also include improper merging of civil and electrical works, limiting fair competition.
The opposition has demanded a detailed probe, blacklisting of the consultant, suspension of payments, and criminal action under relevant laws, including anti-corruption provisions.
Several corporators and Shiv Sena members were present during the submission, warning of democratic protests if strict action is not taken.
