Heatwave Alert Issued; Citizens Advised Precautionary Measures

Pimpri : The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding an intense heatwave expected this year, with forecasts indicating an earlier onset and a prolonged duration compared to usual patterns. In light of increasing reports in the media, authorities have urged citizens to take preventive measures to avoid health risks, including heatstroke-related fatalities.

Heatstroke cases are typically reported between March and June, with higher prevalence in regions such as Vidarbha and Marathwada in Maharashtra. However, precautionary measures are essential across all regions to minimize risks. Citizens are advised to remain vigilant and ensure timely medical attention in case of symptoms.

High-Risk Groups Identified

  • Senior citizens aged 65 and above
  • Children below 5 years
  • Pregnant women
  • Patients with diabetes, heart disease, and those with alcohol dependency
  • Individuals working in high-temperature environments

Common Causes of Heatstroke

  • Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during summer
  • Working in high-heat environments such as boiler rooms, glass factories, bakeries, and brick kilns
  • Wearing tight or heat-absorbing clothing

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Fatigue, high body temperature, and dry skin
  • Loss of appetite, dizziness, headache, and muscle cramps
  • Increased blood pressure, restlessness, confusion, or unconsciousness

Preventive Measures
Authorities have recommended the following precautions:

Do’s:

  • Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours
  • Schedule heavy work in early morning or late evening
  • Wear loose, light-colored cotton clothing
  • Stay hydrated; drink water regularly even if not thirsty
  • Carry water while traveling and consume fluids like sherbet
  • Take frequent breaks in shaded areas
  • Use protective gear like caps, umbrellas, and sunglasses when outdoors
  • Keep homes cool using fans, coolers, and proper ventilation
  • Ensure availability of drinking water at workplaces
  • Provide shaded workspaces wherever possible
  • Take extra care of pregnant women and individuals with chronic illnesses

Don’ts:

  • Do not leave children or pets inside parked vehicles
  • Avoid going outdoors between 12:00 PM and 3:30 PM
  • Refrain from wearing dark, tight, or synthetic clothes
  • Avoid heavy physical work during peak afternoon hours

First Aid and Treatment

  • Shift the patient to a cool or air-conditioned space immediately
  • Try to lower body temperature using cold water or ice packs
  • Provide a cool water bath if possible
  • Place cold compresses on the forehead
  • Administer saline if required under medical supervision
