Call to Pause Mega Recruitment Until SC Sub-Categorisation : MLC Amit Gorkhe
Pune : MLC Amit Gorkhe on Monday urged the Maharashtra government to put on hold ongoing and upcoming mega recruitment drives until sub-categorisation within the Scheduled Castes (SC) quota is implemented.
Addressing a press conference, Gorkhe said the state must first compile and analyse empirical data to ensure equitable distribution of reservation benefits among the most backward sections within SC communities. He cited the August 1, 2024 Supreme Court ruling, which permits sub-categorisation, and called for its early implementation in Maharashtra.
Representatives from multiple organisations, including members of the Matang community, backed the demand, claiming that several sub-castes continue to remain underrepresented despite existing quotas. They also cautioned against “misinformation” that could affect social cohesion.
Gorkhe added that while implementing sub-categorisation, the government must ensure that no group is adversely affected, even as historically deprived sections receive a fair share.
Among the key demands raised were immediate notification of sub-categorisation, a temporary freeze on recruitment until the process is finalised, and the collection of scientific data to guide policy decisions.
