Indrayani-Pavana Cleanup Push Gains Momentum
- Pankaja Munde reviews projects, directs strong action for pollution-free rivers in Pimpri-Chinchwad
Pimpri : In a significant move towards environmental conservation and sustainable urban development, a high-level initiative was undertaken under the chairmanship of Environment and Climate Change Minister Pankaja Munde. The initiative included an on-ground inspection of the Indrayani and Pavana rivers, followed by a comprehensive review meeting at the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) headquarters in Akurdi.
During the river inspection, several critical issues were identified, including the direct discharge of untreated sewage into riverbeds, accumulation of solid waste and the urgent need for riverbank conservation. In response, Mayor Ravi Landge proposed a series of concrete measures aimed at restoring the ecological health of both rivers. These included enhancing the capacity of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), implementing interception and diversion of drainage lines, strengthening riverbank protection, improving solid waste management systems, and ensuring better coordination among various civic agencies.
At the PMRDA headquarters, Minister Munde conducted a detailed review of ongoing development projects and issued necessary directives to the concerned authorities. Emphasis was placed on accelerating infrastructure development while maintaining environmental balance.
The meeting was attended by key public representatives and officials, including MLAs Mahesh Landge, Shankar Jagtap, Uma Khapre, Deputy Mayor Sharmila Babar, Standing Committee Chairman Abhishek Barne, Party Leader Prashant Shitole, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryavanshi and PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari along with other senior officials.
Mayor Ravi Landge emphasized that the Indrayani and Pavana rivers play a crucial role in maintaining the city’s ecological balance. He stated that their rejuvenation is essential for achieving sustainable development and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to implementing the proposed measures effectively. He also expressed a firm resolve to transform Pimpri-Chinchwad into an environmentally sustainable and water-secure city.
This inspection and review meeting are expected to play a pivotal role in accelerating decisive and impactful actions towards river rejuvenation and overall eco-friendly urban development in the region, Citizen says.
