Thousands of CCTV Cameras Non-Functional in City
- Reality Exposed During Mayor Landge’s ICCC Visit
- Questions Raised Over Citizens’ Security
Pimpri : A concerning reality about the city’s surveillance system has come to light during a visit by Mayor Ravi Landge to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at Nigdi, set up by the municipal corporation to strengthen urban security.
According to officials, out of the total 8,790 CCTV cameras installed across the city, only 3,827 cameras are currently operational. The revelation has raised serious concerns over the effectiveness of the city’s security monitoring system.
The ICCC, developed under the Smart City initiative, is intended to monitor key civic services such as traffic management, sanitation operations, and emergency response systems in real time from a centralized location. However, with more than half of the cameras currently non-functional, surveillance at several important junctions, roads, and public places has reportedly been affected.
During his visit, Mayor Ravi Landge reviewed the CCTV surveillance network, traffic control system, and sanitation monitoring mechanisms. Officials informed him that a large number of cameras are temporarily non-operational due to maintenance work, repairs, or other technical reasons, raising questions about the efficiency of the system’s upkeep.
Discussions were also held regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technological solutions to restore the non-functional cameras. The mayor directed officials to take immediate action to make the inactive cameras operational and strengthen the city’s surveillance network.
Meanwhile, citizens have begun questioning the Smart City initiative, pointing out that despite spending crores of rupees on installing thousands of cameras, a significant portion remains non-functional. Many have raised concerns over the lack of proper maintenance and accountability in the system.
“It is necessary that the non-functional CCTV cameras be repaired and made operational immediately. A strong and fully functional surveillance system is essential to maintain safety and efficient civic management in the city.”
