AAP Leaders Detained During Anti-Corruption Protest at PCMC Headquarters

Party alleges police high-handedness; threatens to approach senior police officials and Home Ministry

PIMPRI-CHINCHWAD: Several office-bearers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Pimpri-Chinchwad, along with citizens, were detained by police on Monday after they attempted to submit a memorandum to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner regarding alleged corruption and irregularities in the civic administration.

The party alleged that the Commissioner refused to meet the delegation and that police personnel used force to remove the protesters from the municipal headquarters. AAP strongly condemned the incident, accusing the civic administration of avoiding questions about alleged corruption and suppressing citizens’ voices.

AAP representatives questioned why the Municipal Commissioner was allegedly unwilling to meet citizens who had approached him through a formal process to raise public grievances and concerns about financial irregularities in the civic body.

The party also accused personnel from Sant Tukaram Nagar Police Station of behaving aggressively with the protesters. According to AAP, the Senior Police Inspector allegedly grabbed a citizen by the collar and pushed him out of the municipal building when the delegation attempted to meet the Commissioner.

Terming the alleged incident unacceptable, party representatives questioned whether police personnel and government officials, who receive salaries from taxpayers’ money, were accountable to citizens or acting as protectors of an administration facing corruption allegations.

AAP warned that it would not remain silent over alleged corruption and irregularities in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). The party announced that it would lodge a formal complaint with senior police officials and the Home Ministry regarding the alleged misconduct by police personnel.

Those detained included AAP city representatives Raviraj Kale, Hrishikesh Kanwate, Amit Mhaske, Sanjay Kone, Vaijnath Shirsat, Vicky Password, Supriya Gaikwad, Kavita Konde, Suresh Bawankar, Yogesh Babar and Reshma Babar, among others.

The party also warned of launching an intensified agitation against the civic administration if the issues raised by it were not addressed. AAP reiterated its commitment to raising questions about alleged corruption and demanding accountability from PCMC officials.
