Shankar Jagtap Opposes Water Cut, Says Pimpri-Chinchwad Residents Should Not Face Additional Burden

MLA urges Canal Committee to withdraw proposed cut, citing alternate-day supply and rising tanker expenses for housing societies

Pune : Pimpri-Chinchwad MLA Shankar Jagtap has strongly opposed the proposal to impose an additional water cut on the city, stating that residents should not be made to bear a further financial and daily burden when they have already been receiving water on an alternate-day basis since 2019. He demanded that the proposed water cut be withdrawn immediately at a recent meeting of the Canal Committee.

The meeting was held at Council Hall in Pune in the presence of Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Guardian Minister Sunetra Pawar and Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Legislative Council members Uma Khapare and Amit Gorkhe, among others. The city’s water supply and the possibility of further restrictions were discussed during the meeting.

Jagtap said that residents have been managing with alternate-day water supply for several years and that imposing further cuts would be unjustified, considering the city’s growing population and daily water requirements. He stressed the need for proper planning of available water resources and improvements in the distribution system to ensure a regular and adequate supply.

Rising Financial Burden of Water Tankers

Jagtap pointed out that several housing societies in Pimpri-Chinchwad are already dependent on private water tankers to meet their daily requirements, resulting in additional expenses for residents. While citizens regularly pay municipal taxes, they are also forced to spend extra money to secure an adequate water supply.

He said that imposing another water cut under these circumstances would further increase the financial burden on residents. The proposed reduction should therefore be avoided to provide relief to citizens, he demanded.

City Draws Less Water Than Its Allocated Quota

Jagtap also highlighted that Pimpri-Chinchwad is currently drawing less water from the Pavana Dam than the quantity allocated to the city. He said that although proper water management is essential in view of the possibility of drought conditions in the future, reducing the city’s existing water allocation further would not be an appropriate solution.

He urged the authorities to withdraw the proposed additional water cut and ensure that there is no reduction in the water quota allocated to Pimpri-Chinchwad.
