Maan Metro Station Leakage Blamed on Drainage Blockage

PMRDA rules out structural defects; incident raises questions over station readiness ahead of November 4 opening

PUNE : The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has attributed the water leakage at Maan Metro Station on Sunday evening to a temporary blockage in a rainwater drainage pipe on the station’s terrace slab.

In a statement, PMRDA Chief Engineer Rinaj Pathan said the obstruction prevented rainwater from draining properly, causing it to accumulate and overflow. The water subsequently seeped through the gap between the station box and the entry structure, becoming visible at the mezzanine level.

Pathan said the blockage had been cleared and rainwater was now draining normally. He also ruled out any structural defects in the station box or entry structure.

The clarification came after videos circulated on social media showing water dripping from the station ceiling during rainfall. Station staff were seen using buckets and floor wipers to clear the accumulated water.

The incident has raised concerns over station readiness, particularly as Metro Line 3 is scheduled to be inaugurated on November 3. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis are expected to attend the ceremony at Balewadi Sports Complex. Passenger services on 17 stations are scheduled to begin on November 4.

The leakage has prompted residents and IT professionals to seek thorough safety checks of drainage systems, electrical installations, lifts, escalators and other passenger facilities before the corridor opens to the public.
