Strict Action Ordered Against Those Obstructing Dalit Funerals, Says Govt After Question by MLA Amit Gorkhe
Demand for suspension of responsible officials if cremation rights denied
Pimpri : BJP MLA Amit Gorkhe raised a strong issue in the Maharashtra Legislative Council regarding incidents in rural areas where members of backward communities are allegedly prevented from performing last rites in public cremation grounds.
Through a starred question, Gorkhe said it is painful that in a progressive state like Maharashtra—inspired by the ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Jyotirao Phule, Shahu Maharaj and B. R. Ambedkar—people from backward communities still face resistance in conducting funerals with dignity.
He demanded that if such incidents occur, officials including tehsildars, block development officers and police patils should be held directly responsible and face suspension for negligence.
Responding to the issue, Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat said the government will ensure land is allocated for cremation grounds for backward communities where such facilities do not exist. He also warned that strict action will be taken against any official or public representative who creates obstacles.
The minister added that necessary funds will be provided through the Social Justice Department and district planning committees to address the issue. Other legislators, including Amol Mitkari, Rajesh Rathod and Jagannath Abhyankar, also participated in the discussion, highlighting the seriousness of the matter.
