Alandi, Kelgaon Observe Shutdown to Mourn Death of Eight Students in Diveagar Tragedy
- Local traders, businesses and residents urged to join voluntary shutdown; essential services exempted
Pune : A voluntary shutdown has been called in Alandi and Kelgaon on October 2 to mourn the death of eight students from Alandi who drowned in a tragic incident at Diveagar in Raigad district.
The shutdown has been appealed by Alandi Dehu Municipal Council president Prashant Poptarao Kurhade and residents of Alandi and Kelgaon. Traders, business establishments, institutions, organisations and citizens have been urged to participate voluntarily as a mark of respect to the deceased students and solidarity with their bereaved families.
According to the organisers, several traders and business owners have extended their support to the shutdown. Residents have decided to come together to express their grief and pay tribute to the students who lost their lives in the incident.
Hospitals, medical stores, ambulance services and other essential services have been exempted from the shutdown to avoid inconvenience to citizens, organisers said.
The Diveagar tragedy has caused widespread grief in Alandi and surrounding areas. Prayer meetings and condolence programmes are also being organised at various locations to pay tribute to the deceased students.
The eight students from Alandi died after drowning in the sea at Diveagar during a visit to the coastal area. The incident has left their families and the local community mourning.
