Maharashtra Schools to Get 13-Day Diwali Break; November 16 Reopening Set
Education Department Fixes Holiday Dates, Mandates 230 Working Days for 2026–27 Academic Year
PUNE : Students and teachers across Maharashtra will get a 13-day Diwali vacation in November, with recognised primary, secondary and higher secondary schools scheduled to remain closed from November 2 to November 14, 2026. Schools will reopen on November 16, marking the beginning of the second semester of the 2026–27 academic year.
The vacation schedule has been outlined in a circular issued by the state Education Department as part of the academic calendar. The announcement allows students, parents and teachers to plan their festival celebrations and travel in advance.
The first semester, which began on June 15, 2026, will conclude on October 31. Following the Diwali break, the second semester will run from November 16, 2026, to May 1, 2027.
The holiday period covers major festive occasions, including Dhanteras on November 6, Diwali Padwa or Balipratipada on November 10, and Bhaubij on November 11.
Schools Must Complete 230 Working Days
Along with announcing the vacation schedule, the department has reiterated requirements concerning school holidays and working days. Under the Secondary School Code, the total number of holidays of all types during the academic year must not exceed 76 days, while schools are required to complete at least 230 working days.
Schools cannot independently alter the prescribed vacation schedule. Institutions seeking adjustments to accommodate local festivals or other holidays, including Ganeshotsav and Christmas, must obtain prior permission from the education authorities.
Any changes to the announced dates must comply with the department’s instructions, the circular states.
Summer Vacation from May 3
The second semester will conclude on May 1, 2027, followed by the summer vacation from May 3 to June 14. The next academic year is expected to begin after the summer break.
The prescribed calendar provides a common framework for schools across the state while allowing adjustments only through the authorised process. Parents and students are advised to check with their respective schools for official notices and any specific instructions regarding implementation of the schedule.
