Water Tankers Supply Drinking Water to Five Villages, 53 Hamlets in Pune District
Zilla Parishad approves 294 new borewell projects; Rs. 5.36 crore sanctioned for repairs and strengthening of rural water supply schemes
Pune : The Pune Zilla Parishad’s Rural Water Supply Department has intensified measures to address water scarcity in rural areas of the district. Currently, drinking water is being supplied through eight tankers to five villages and 53 hamlets, benefiting approximately 18,650 residents. The administration is closely monitoring the situation and arranging additional tankers wherever required to ensure a regular water supply to scarcity-hit areas. Baramati, Daund and Indapur talukas are currently receiving tanker water.
According to the department, Pune district has recorded an average rainfall of 819 mm, approximately 95% of the seasonal average. Despite the rainfall, water scarcity persists in certain rural pockets, prompting the administration to continue emergency supply measures. Wells and borewells are also being acquired on a private basis to maintain the supply. Officials said most scheduled tanker trips were being completed as planned.
Rs. 5.36 crore for repairs and water-source strengthening
The state government has granted administrative approval for special repairs to 33 rural piped water supply schemes. Approval has also been granted for 10 water-source strengthening works and 21 works involving deepening and desilting of wells. A total of approximately Rs. 5.36 crore has been sanctioned for these works. Repairs to 611 borewells have also been approved, with an estimated allocation of Rs. 2.56 crore. These works are expected to restore defunct borewells and improve the capacity of those operating below their potential, helping rural residents access water more regularly.
294 new borewell projects approved
In view of the growing water requirements, the administration has approved 294 new borewell projects, with approximately Rs. 2.49 crore sanctioned for the works. The department has reported that drilling of all the approved borewells has been completed. The new borewells are expected to provide additional water sources to villages facing shortages. Meanwhile, work under regional water supply schemes in Morgaon, regional Bele and regional Shivri has been completed.
Preparations for the next scarcity period
The Rural Water Supply Department has begun preparing a contingency plan to address potential water shortages between October 2026 and June 2027. Officials have been instructed to plan ahead and implement necessary measures promptly. The Zilla Parishad said it would continue monitoring water availability and take appropriate steps to ensure that rural communities receive adequate drinking water during the coming months.
