‘Save Democracy March’ to Be Held in Pimpri-Chinchwad on October 8
Opposition alliance, civil society and social organisations to raise concerns over electoral transparency and voter lists
PIMPRI-CHINCHWAD : The Pimpri-Chinchwad unit of the India bloc, along with civil society groups, progressive organisations and various social organisations, will organise a ‘Save Democracy March’ on Thursday, October 8, to raise concerns over the protection of democracy and the Constitution and transparency in the electoral process.
According to the organisers, the march will begin at 11 am from Vitthal Temple in Akurdi village and proceed to the Tehsildar’s Office in Nigdi, where it will conclude.
The organisers have claimed that changes in electoral rolls, questions regarding the names of eligible voters and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise have created confusion and concern among citizens. They said the electoral process should remain independent, impartial and transparent and demanded an independent and impartial inquiry into questions raised over the functioning of the Election Commission.
Demands for action
According to the organisers, the march will call for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to accept moral responsibility and resign.
They will also demand that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar be removed from office and that action be taken against him in accordance with the law.
The organisers have further demanded that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls be scrapped, the functioning of the Election Commission be restored in an independent, impartial and transparent manner, and key decisions taken during Gyanesh Kumar’s tenure as Chief Election Commissioner be independently reviewed.
The organisers have appealed to office-bearers and workers of constituent parties of the India bloc, social activists, civil society representatives, progressive organisations and citizens who support democratic values to participate in the march.
