{"id":3727,"date":"2026-10-27T11:13:22","date_gmt":"2026-10-27T05:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theleadernews.in\/?p=3727"},"modified":"2026-10-27T11:13:24","modified_gmt":"2026-10-27T05:43:24","slug":"scrap-ravet-waste-to-energy-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theleadernews.in\/?p=3727","title":{"rendered":"Scrap Ravet Waste-to-Energy Project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Shailaja More flags health and environmental risks, seeks permanent cancellation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PIMPRI-CHINCHWAD :<\/strong> Former Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Deputy Mayor and corporator Shailaja Avinash More has demanded the permanent cancellation of the proposed waste-to-energy project with a capacity of around 1,000 tonnes per day at Sector 23 in the Ravet\u2013Pradhikaran area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More submitted a representation to PCMC Commissioner Dr Vijay Suryawanshi during a meeting, stating that residents of the surrounding areas strongly oppose the project proposed near Durga Hill and the water treatment plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deputy Mayor Sharmila Babar, corporators Amit Gawade, Raju Misal, R S Kumar and Sameer More were present during the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her representation, More highlighted concerns over the potential impact of the project on the health of residents, drinking water sources and the local environment. The Pradhikaran, Ravet and Akurdi areas are estimated to have a population of around 1.25 lakh to 1.50 lakh, with several reputed schools, colleges, educational institutions and hospitals in the vicinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She expressed concern that emissions from waste processing and incineration could include fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen oxides, dioxins and furans, potentially posing respiratory and long-term health risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More also raised concerns about possible contamination of groundwater and water sources due to the improper management of ash, pollutants and other hazardous substances. She urged the civic administration to consider the future expansion of the water treatment facility while assessing the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The representation also stressed the need to protect the green cover, bird habitats and biodiversity around Durga Hill, including the approved development plan for the biodiversity park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More sought an official clarification from the civic body on whether the proposed site had been designated for a garbage depot or a power-generation facility in the approved development plan. She also warned that transporting around 1,000 tonnes of waste daily could increase traffic congestion, dust, foul odour and the risk of accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The representation further raised questions about fire hazards, emission-control mechanisms, ash disposal and the need to consider applicable security restrictions in view of the presence of the Dehu Road Ordnance Factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More demanded that the civic administration halt the land-transfer and construction processes and permanently scrap the project. Instead, she called for greater emphasis on waste segregation at source, recycling, biomethanation and decentralised waste-processing facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also urged the PCMC to consult residents, housing societies, educational institutions and elected representatives before taking decisions on projects that could affect the surrounding neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are not opposed to making the city garbage-free. However, development should not come at the cost of citizens\u2019 health, drinking water and the environment.
