{"id":3091,"date":"2026-09-29T12:11:07","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T06:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theleadernews.in\/?p=3091"},"modified":"2026-09-29T12:11:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T06:41:10","slug":"integrated-infrastructure-plan-for-chakan-hinjewadi-gets-in-principle-approval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theleadernews.in\/?p=3091","title":{"rendered":"Integrated Infrastructure Plan for Chakan-Hinjewadi Gets In-Principle Approval"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u20b91,400 crore plan for Chakan and \u20b9426.54 crore package for Hinjewadi; work scheduled to begin from December<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pune :<\/strong> Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has given in-principle approval to integrated infrastructure development plans worth \u20b91,400 crore for Chakan and \u20b9426.54 crore for Hinjewadi, aimed at addressing traffic congestion, improving road infrastructure, strengthening stormwater drainage and upgrading civic facilities in the two major industrial and IT hubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plans were presented at a meeting held at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai in the presence of Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and senior officials from various departments. Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi presented the plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Dudi, work on the proposed projects in Chakan and Hinjewadi is planned to begin from December, with significant improvements in traffic management and stormwater drainage in Chakan targeted before the next monsoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CM calls for coordinated approach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fadnavis directed the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), Public Works Department, Zilla Parishad and other agencies to work together for the development of infrastructure in Chakan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stressed the need for coordination among departments and the effective utilisation of funds and available resources for road development, stormwater drainage, traffic management and public amenities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>78-km natural drainage network to be restored<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Waterlogging has emerged as a major problem in the Chakan industrial area during the monsoon. A survey has found that encroachments have affected the flow of water through around 78 km of natural drainage channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The waterlogging has reportedly affected industrial units, disrupted traffic and, in some instances, forced companies to suspend operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the proposed plan, natural drainage channels will be cleared, stormwater drainage systems will be developed along both sides of roads, and the capacity of culverts and bridges will be increased. Water-retention arrangements will also be created at suitable locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on an irrigation department survey, the routes of the natural drainage channels have been identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around 70\u201380 per cent of the action to remove encroachments on the drains has already been completed, according to officials. The remaining obstructions will be removed in phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The administration has set a target of clearing the natural drains and completing the drainage arrangements by June 2027. Around 38 km of roadside stormwater drains are also proposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>75 km of roads to be upgraded in first phase<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A study of the 498-km road network in the Chakan industrial area has been carried out. Roads have been prioritised based on traffic density, industrial importance, movement of goods vehicles, road condition, waterlogging, safety and connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the first phase, around 75 km of roads will be upgraded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work will include pedestrian pathways, stormwater drainage, traffic-management facilities and road-safety measures. Officials said the available right of way would be utilised, avoiding the need for land acquisition in this phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Encroachments within the road network will be removed to maximise the use of available space. Separate provisions for utility corridors below roads have also been proposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dedicated pedestrian facilities for workers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large number of industrial workers commute through Chakan every day. However, surveys have highlighted the absence of dedicated pedestrian pathways and safe road-crossing facilities on several roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The risk is particularly high after industrial shifts when large numbers of workers walk along the roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed improvements will therefore include dedicated footpaths, safer pedestrian crossings and traffic-control measures. Pedestrian facilities have also been proposed as part of the planned work on the national highway flyover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>500 additional buses proposed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large workforce travels to Chakan from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, resulting in a high volume of private vehicles and traffic congestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed transport plan has been prepared using traffic data and big-data analysis. Route-wise bus services for workers travelling to Chakan from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have been proposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around 500 additional buses are estimated to be required from different locations. Authorities expect that strengthening public transport will reduce dependence on private vehicles and help ease congestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Six major junctions to be redesigned<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six important junctions in Chakan have been identified for improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan proposes scientific redesign of the junctions, turning arrangements based on traffic flow and correction of unauthorised dividers on the national highway. Designated U-turn facilities will be provided at appropriate locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To improve traffic flow and road safety, AI-based traffic signals, cameras, radar systems, automatic number-plate recognition and a central command and control centre have also been proposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Parking, beautification and public amenities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shortage of parking facilities for heavy vehicles has resulted in trucks being parked along roads in the Chakan industrial area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MIDC has made parking facilities available at five locations, and a strategic mechanism has been proposed to increase their utilisation and shift heavy vehicles from roads to designated parking areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan also proposes beautification and maintenance of road dividers through private-sector participation. Industrial establishments located along the roads may also be involved in developing public amenities, including public toilets and bus stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Water supply, power and waste management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chakan industrial area&#8217;s water-supply project is targeted for completion in 2027. A proposal has also been made to transfer the existing water-supply scheme operated through the Chakan Industries Association to the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said the short-term power deficit has been addressed. MIDC has provided the required land, and construction of a 100 MVA power substation is scheduled to begin in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new substation is expected to help address power-supply-related difficulties in the industrial area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For solid waste management, a centralised waste-processing facility is proposed for waste generated by 14 villages and two municipal councils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tendering for the project has been initiated, with PMRDA expected to establish the system. The facility is targeted to become operational within the next 8\u201310 months, with waste management planned on the basis of collection and processing charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AI-based traffic enforcement in Chakan, Talegaon and Hinjewadi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An AI-based traffic management and enforcement system is proposed for Chakan, Talegaon and Hinjewadi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system will work in coordination with traffic police through a command and control centre for traffic management and enforcement against violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said approval has also been given for a CCTV network and Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personnel from the Maharashtra Security Force will also be deployed to support traffic management. Around 100 personnel are scheduled to be made available for Chakan from October 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u20b9426.54 crore plan for Hinjewadi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A separate \u20b9426.54 crore infrastructure plan has been prepared to address traffic congestion and other infrastructure issues in Hinjewadi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address power-supply issues in the IT hub, six acres of land have been made available.
