{"id":3088,"date":"2026-09-29T12:03:43","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T06:33:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theleadernews.in\/?p=3088"},"modified":"2026-09-29T12:03:44","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T06:33:44","slug":"pune-economic-region-targets-220-billion-economy-by-2036","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theleadernews.in\/?p=3088","title":{"rendered":"Pune Economic Region Targets $220 Billion Economy by 2036"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Growth Hub plan proposes \u20b99\u201310 lakh crore investment, 15\u201320 lakh additional jobs and 250-km Metro network<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pune : <\/strong>The Pune Economic Region has set an ambitious target of growing its economy to $200\u2013220 billion by 2036, under a comprehensive development roadmap prepared as part of the NITI Aayog\u2019s Growth Hub initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roadmap, presented before Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at a meeting at Sahyadri Guest House, proposes 58 priority projects, investments of around \u20b99\u201310 lakh crore and the creation of 15\u201320 lakh additional employment opportunities over the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan covers areas under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the roadmap, the Pune Economic Region\u2019s economy stood at around $68 billion in 2025-26. The plan seeks to increase the region\u2019s real economic growth rate from the current 6\u20136.5 per cent to around 10 per cent, contributing to Maharashtra\u2019s long-term goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2047.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presentation was made in the presence of Minister of State Madhuri Misal, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, Maharashtra Finance Commission Chairman Nitin Kareer and senior officials from various departments. ISEG Managing Director Shirish Sankhye and McKinsey\u2019s Raunak Shah made the presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Focus on high-tech manufacturing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roadmap identifies advanced manufacturing, automobiles and electric vehicles, engineering products, defence, robotics and drones, electronics and semiconductors, and biotechnology as priority sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proposals include an electric vehicle and future mobility hub, a high-tech engineering park, and centres for electronics, defence technology and robotics manufacturing. IT, global capability centres and artificial intelligence hubs have also been proposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These sectors are expected to generate around 4\u20135 lakh additional jobs. The plan also aims to increase the number of startups in the region to more than 10,000 and reskill around 1.5\u20132 lakh technology professionals in AI, cloud computing and cybersecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>74\u201376 lakh jobs targeted by 2036<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pune Economic Region currently has around 56 lakh jobs. The roadmap envisages total employment rising to 74\u201376 lakh over the next decade, with new opportunities expected in manufacturing, services, healthcare, education, tourism, agro-processing and transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan places emphasis on ensuring that the benefits of economic expansion reach local residents while improving living standards and protecting the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Public transport share targeted at 50%<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A major focus of the plan is reducing dependence on private vehicles. The share of public transport in daily travel is proposed to increase from the current 13 per cent to 50 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roadmap proposes 11 railway projects, 13 road projects, a 250-km Metro network, 12,000\u201314,000 buses and six multimodal transport hubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective is to ensure that at least half of daily journeys in the Pune Economic Region are made through public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>90% rehabilitation of eligible slum families by 2036<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The roadmap proposes large-scale slum redevelopment and rehabilitation, with a target of rehabilitating around 90 per cent of eligible slum families by 2036.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also proposes construction of 4\u20135 lakh affordable homes for different income groups, industrial workers, students and technology-sector employees. This includes around one lakh worker hostels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cluster-based redevelopment of densely populated areas has also been proposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tourism circuit across Pune region<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Growth Hub plan aims to position the Pune Economic Region among India\u2019s top 10 tourism destinations by developing six major segments \u2014 heritage and fort tourism, sports and adventure tourism, health and wedding tourism, events tourism, wildlife tourism, and religious and cultural tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Fort Circuit<\/strong> connecting Shivneri, Lohagad, Rajgad and Sinhagad has been proposed, along with water tourism centres at Pavana and Bhatghar, a <strong>600-km Sahyadri open trekking trail<\/strong>, a health tourism corridor, an events and entertainment centre at PIECC and a Junnar leopard safari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Agriculture and rural economy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan also seeks to strengthen the rural economy through horticulture, dairy, food processing, cold-chain infrastructure and biofuel projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grapes, bananas, pomegranates, figs and strawberries have been identified as key horticultural crops. The roadmap proposes increasing the gross value added of the agriculture and food-processing sector from around $5 billion to $10\u201312 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Additional water supply planned<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pune region is projected to require around 200 million litres of additional water per day. The roadmap proposes measures including additional water from Mulshi, increased supply from the Bhama basin, water recycling, improved distribution efficiency and desilting of water bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Skills, women\u2019s employment and emerging sectors<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan proposes expanding skill-development programmes, Industrial Training Institutes and university courses to meet the requirements of emerging sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training opportunities will focus on electric vehicles, electronics, robotics and biotechnology, while increasing women\u2019s participation in employment has also been identified as a priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Policy reforms and implementation mechanism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several policy reforms have been proposed covering semiconductors, industrial worker housing, rural-urban transition, MSMEs, integrated townships, tourism, cluster redevelopment, autonomous industrial townships, private industrial parks, startups, slum redevelopment and bus operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For implementation, the roadmap proposes a Regulatory Council chaired by the Chief Minister, a State Steering Committee headed by the Chief Secretary, a Pune Growth Hub Steering Committee and a project management unit under PMRDA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials present at the meeting included Additional Chief Secretary (Transport) Sanjay Sethi, Additional Chief Secretary (Forest) Milind Mhaiskar, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) Vikas Chandra Rastogi, Additional Chief Secretary (Higher and Technical Education) <strong>B. Venugopal Reddy<\/strong>, Principal Secretary (Industries) P. Anbalagan, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhary, PCMC Police Commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey and other senior officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pune Growth Hub process was initiated on August 1, 2025, with the participation of NITI Aayog, the Maharashtra Government and the Pune International Centre.
