Pune :<\/strong> The 65-year-old man arrested for the alleged sexual assault and murder of a four-year-old girl in Bhor\u2019s Nasrapur area is a habitual offender who had previously faced multiple molestation and POCSO cases, Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandip Singh Gill said on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Police said the accused had earlier been booked in a molestation case in 1998 and again in 2015 under molestation and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act provisions. He was acquitted in the latter case in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gill said the accused, a daily wage labourer, is a repeat offender. According to the investigation, the crime took place between 3.30 pm and 4 pm on Friday. Police received information around 5.15 pm and arrested the accused within nearly 90 minutes. \u201cWe will ensure that the chargesheet is filed at the earliest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The case came to light after the girl, who had gone missing earlier, was found dead with her body hidden beneath a heap of cow dung, triggering outrage in the region. Police suspect sexual assault, while medical reports are awaited to confirm the exact cause of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis termed the incident condemnable and said the state government would pursue the case urgently. He said a request would be made to the High Court for a special fast-track court, a special public prosecutor would be appointed, and the prosecution would seek the death penalty for the accused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The incident sparked protests by local residents, who blocked the Pune-Satara highway on Friday night and later gathered outside Rajgad police station demanding strict action. Senior officials pacified the crowd, assuring stringent legal steps.
